The task of securing freedom must be renewed in each generation. In democratic societies, young people must
be taught the values and virtues of freedom. But they must also experience and practice them in order to
develop knowledge, confidence, and passion to carry freedom forward.
The George Washington Youth Citizenship Institute organizes and sponsors a series of student exchanges in
which outstanding students from emerging democracies are invited to come to the United States and participate
with American students their own age in a multi-week “freedom experience.” These international youth learn
about the institutes, laws, processes, structure, and values that uphold a free society.
